Known as Gaberones before 1969, the capital city of Botswana was named, as was practice, after Kgosi Gaborone of the BaTlokwa whose village was just across the river from what is now Gaborone. The old Gaberones has become a suburb of the new Gaborone, and is now known as "the Village". Today Gaborone is a bustling modern city. Gaborone is the capital, and largest, city of Botswana. Gaborone is located in south the eastern corner of Botswana
in a flat valley between Kgale and Oodi Hills. This is the administrative capital of the South-East and just 15 kilometres from the South African Border. Gaborone was chosen because of its strategic location, its proximity to the railway line and Pretoria, its already established administrative offices, its accessibility to most of the major tribes, its non-association with any particular tribe, and, most importantly, its closeness to a major water source. Gaborone is the fastest growing city in Africa with the majority of the country's infrastructural budget going towards the improvement of the city's roads, buildings and services.
Gaborone is situated near the edge of the Kalahari Desert and has a dry subtropical climate with the occasional thunderstorm in the summer rainy season which typically lasts from November to March. Very little rain falls outside of these months which are prone to dust storms. The natural vegetation is of scattered trees.
Phakalane an upmarket suburb lies north just outside the city's boundary. It is here, in Phakalane that one will find 5 star hotel services, good restaurants and a vibrant night life. Originally planned as a small town, Gaborone's development has necessitated construction of a larger city dam to provide adequate water supply.
Phakalane Golf Course
Designed by the DDV Design Group this 18 hole international standard championship golf course was completed in June 2002. With an average green size of 700m2, 13 dams and 75 bunkers this course is a both a challenge and a pleasure to play. Club membership is offered to residents and non-residents of the estate which boasts the largest Pro Shop in Botswana.
Gaborone Game Reserve
Established in 1988 the Gaborone Game Reserve is one of the busiest reserves in Botswana. Home to a variety of game including kudu, wildebeest, zebra, springbok and antelope, the eland. Along certain roads of the park, enclosed for protection, you will find the park's couple of rhino. A wide variety of habitats leads to a wide variety of birds making the Gaborone Game Reserve very popular.
The National Museum and Art Gallery
Located in the heart of Gaborone City is a delightful compound of museum and gallery. This museum has 7 very different but connected divisions coming together as a cohesive whole. The National Art Gallery has been identified as one of southern Africa's top three outstanding galleries and in this respect draws faraway artists who wish to exhibit their best artwork.
Kgale Hill dominates Gaborone on the south western edge of the city. Visitors can choose from one of three well-defined routes up the hill, each offering a pleasant climb with breathtaking views of the Dam and city. Wildlife in the area includes a troop of baboons and a pair of black eagles that nests in the cliff-face just below the peak. There have been reports of early morning sightings of leopard.
The Main Mall (The Mall)
This between the Railway Station and the Army Garrison was originally planned to be the town centre. Now the heart of Gaborone offering shops, banks and business offices. At the eastern end of The Mall you will find the Civic Centre that also houses a public reference library. The Pula Arch, a landmark commemorating the Independence of Botswana, can be found opposite the Civic Centre.
